Project Update - 4/28/2009

Good Day Mach-II-ers! By popular demand, here is the project update for the past few weeks. We send project updates out on an as-needed basis. Without further ado, here is this week's update:

This Week's Special Thanks

Just wanted to thank Derrick Jackson for contributing a great start to the code to our auto-update feature for the Mach-II Dashboard. The phone home feature will check with mach-ii.com for new versions of the framework and dashboard let you auto-update them. It's still very alpha and not feature complete yet, but a picture is worth a thousand words so here is a screen shot for your coding pleasure:

I'd like to also thank Jonah and Brian for their insightful comments about how Mach-II can support auto-negotiating between HTTP/HTTPS (secured support) in a future version of Mach-II. It was great "conversation" on a Trac ticket so if you want to throw your two cents into this, we would love to hear from you. Community involvement is essential to creating great future versions of Mach-II so become involved by reading and commenting on the Trac ticket:

As part of our champaign, Don't Fear the Wiki -- the wiki can be edited by anybody. Helping with documentation is a great way to get noticed by Team Mach-II and is how our newest team member, Brian FitzGerald, became involved with the project. If you need help with using the wiki or about adding articles, feel free to contact Brian for help -- brian [@at@] mach-ii.com.

Mach-II Project Blog Highlights

Mach-II: History, Philosophy, and Community
Since there's been a bit of a stir about the state of CFML frameworks recently, and having been in the middle of this sort of thing four years ago (was it that long?) with Mach-II, it seemed an appropriate time to share some thoughts that have been fermenting in my head (Matt) as well as in discussions on the Mach-II team for quite a while. Specifically I'd like to share with everyone some of the philosophy underlying the Mach-II project, our development process, why we do things the way we do, and ultimately why we do what we do.

Let's Get Logging
With Mach-II 1.6 already published as a stable release, a fair amount of focus has shifted to the development of 1.8 (Simplicity) and upcoming features such as the handy Environment and HTMLHelper properties, redirect enhancements, and more.

Skeleton for Mach-II 1.6 Stable Release and Future Plans

Team Mach-II is happy that the Mach-II skeleton for 1.6 (including 1.6.1)  is ready for prime time. The skeleton is an indispensible collection of files to get you building your Mach-II faster.  Be sure to read the README file on how to use the skeleton.  It's a snap to use...

Download the Mach-II 1.6 Skeleton

We have some interesting ideas about how we can make the skeleton even better for Mach-II 1.8.   We might build a skeleton "builder" application that will generate a customized skeleton based on an "interview" process. This would include questions on if you want to use ColdSpring, Mach-II logging, Mach-II caching, setting up environments and customizing other features such as how URLs are built.  We would like to appeal to the community for ideas about future versions of the skeleton and solicit for help in building this development tool. Feel free to contact Team Mach-II at info at mach-ii.com if you want to help out.  Maybe you already have an in-house tools similar to this you want to share with the community...

Mach-II Dashboard 1.0 Reaches RC1 and Released

Team Mach-II is happy to announce that the Mach-II Dashboard 1.0 has reached the status of Release Candidate 1 status.  This means that we are becoming closer to releasing a stable zip of the Dashboard.

The Mach-II Dashboard is a Mach-II module that is designed to assist developers create and manage the development of applications. The Dashboard requires Mach-II 1.6 or higher.  Check out the Dashboard wiki for screenshots and a complete list of features.

There was one significant addition that was added to the Dashboard during the Beta release. A new property called 'enableLogin' (which is true by default) allows you to disable the login / authentication page if you want.  If you are using the Mach-II 1.8 BER, you can enable / disable the login page by environment name or environment group (you can read more about how to configure the 'enableLogin' property).

Without further ado, please take a moment to download the Mach-II Dashboard RC1 zip now.

Let's Get Logging!

With Mach-II 1.6 already published as a stable release, a fair amount of focus has shifted to the development of 1.8 (Simplicity) and upcoming features such as the handy Environment and HTMLHelper properties, redirect enhancements, and more.

However, before too much focus shifts away from 1.5 and 1.6, I would like to remind Mach-II users about one feature in particular that should certainly not slip under the radar.
